Nodum

Nodum is a photographic series that explores the concepts and concerns regarding the esthetics of the female body, yet inviting those very concepts to be reinterpreted and transcended. This project was inspired and influenced by pre-Raphaelite paintings and the Japanese art of rope binding called shibari; as well as other classic icons from photography and paintings. However, as in all creative processes, this project followed its own evolutionary path and the resulting images are the consequence of an organic and spontaneous creative flow. In this manner, different implicit lines of work can be identified throughout these images. On one side, the fantasy of the nude female body, enveloped by the embrace of intricate knots; that surround it and invigorate the eroticism in an open-air setting. On the other hand, the quiet stillness of the landscape echoes the silent submission implicit in the bindings. Yet there are other elements that can be observed: the vestige, the marks, the ephemeral scar, the kiss of the rope as a symbolic element of the interventions on the human body and on the desertic landscape. The traces that the body leaves in its wake as it moves through the sand, or the projection of shadows of branches and water also weave a web over the body. The marks that the ropes leave on the skin are the memory of being dominated, in both a literal and metaphorical sense. The act of being tied implies an exercise of conscience over the corporeal. The stillness of the mind through the immobility of the body and its seamless integration into the barren landscape results in a meditative experience. The tranquil state of the mind is achieved through the voluntary fastening of the body. This project tries to reinterpret the image and the aesthetics of the female body through binding.

Leunar

Gabo A 3 day pilgrimage turned into a 30 year journey 30 years of work and a universe of five thousand photos What can you do with them, how to get them to talk? From taking a train and getting off in the middle of the night in the desert, seeking shelter as it dawns, to this sequence of pictures that has been accumulating for years. This project has evolved into 11 books that talk about different topics; about friends, the experience of peyote, the road, the night, the plants… So I started working with Adriana Medina to make a fresh and aleatory edition. Adriana: It was throughout several months. I saw it little by little but it seemed to me like a whole universe on a visual, spiritual, and historical level, because it`s a very valuable historical document. It was like starting listening to the images talk to each other, and they spoke from different parameters, from different filters. And yes, we may say that that heart began to beat and came into life through the creation of the books, infused with all the stories and Gabriel´s company. And obviously, all the work that Gabriel has put into going to the desert, taking the pictures, and the love he has for his photo archive. The intention of including text along with the images in some parts, was to generate an experience, to have a sensation, and not just a supporting feature. It was about weaving text and image to open up an internal experience. Gabriel: This Project needed a heart, a core, something that contained all the books, so I designed a case, holding a photograph of a Peyote family taken in the middle of the night in the bottom, Why? Because Peyote is a plant that opens up your heart, it´s a plant that stimulates your heart. Leunar is a Huichol word that means Burnt Hill, The Sacred Hill. The process to finish this case with 11 books is to make a 5 box edition. 5 boxes with 11 books each, signed and numbered as an author’s edition.
